Almost all tactical first aid kits you see online have the acronyms FDA and CE on the product sheet. But few stores bother to explain what each seal actually verifies, and that's precisely the question you should ask yourself before entrusting your safety (or someone else's) to a tourniquet or hemostatic gauze.
What does "FDA" mean on a first aid kit?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is the US agency that regulates, among other things, medical devices. When a product is registered with the FDA, it means that the manufacturer has declared it as a medical device and that it meets the manufacturing, material, and traceability requirements for that category; it's not a sticker that can simply be bought.
What about the "CE" mark?
The CE mark is the European equivalent: it certifies that the product complies with European Union regulations regarding safety, health, and environmental protection. For medical and trauma materials, this involves specific tests and technical documentation, not just a simple administrative process.
Why this is not "just another seal"
An uncertified tourniquet or hemostatic gauze can fail precisely when it's most needed: during severe bleeding. Certification doesn't guarantee that nothing will ever fail, but it does mean that the product has gone through a control process that an unmarked generic product has not. For materials applied directly to a serious wound, that difference matters.
How to know if the certificate is real
- Look for the FDA registration number or the notified body for the CE mark: a serious manufacturer can provide it.
- Be wary of certificates that only appear as an image on the product sheet, without any verifiable data behind them.
- Compare the materials included in the kits: certified hemostatics, Israeli bandages, and tourniquets usually specify composition and origin, not just "high quality."
